HOLY WEEK

Holy Week is coming! The holiest period of the church year is almost upon us, and you are invited and welcomed in these liturgies that move us through the final week of Jesus’ life and culminate in the celebration of resurrection at Easter.

Every day of Holy Week:

Morning Prayer on St. Paul’s Facebook page at 8:00 a.m.

  • March 23/24: Palm Sunday - Saturday at 5 p.m., Sunday  at 10:15 a.m.

We enter Holy Week as Jesus enters Jerusalem, riding on a donkey as the people shout “Hosanna,” meaning “save now”, and wave branches. The liturgy begins with triumph but concludes with the reading of the Passion: the story of Jesus’ arrest, trial, and crucifixion. There is no dismissal on this day; this service begins a single, multi-day liturgy that does not conclude until the end of the Easter Vigil on Saturday night. We leave this service singing “Within Our Darkest Night”, the musical thread that binds these liturgies together.

  • March 28: Maundy Thursday - 6 p.m.  Dinner, Eucharist, PRAYER VIGIL

We have two different stories in the Gospels about this day: in the Gospel of John, Jesus’ last meal with his disciples includes his “new commandment”: love one another. The central action of John’s story is Jesus’ washing of his disciples’ feet. The other Gospels tell the story of Jesus adding a personal note to the liturgy of the Passover, telling his disciples to remember him in bread and wine. This evening service includes dinner and Eucharist around the tables, a procession to the darkened church, the stripping of the altar, and the beginning of the overnight prayer vigil, remembering Jesus’ prayer in the Garden of Gethsemane.

  • March 29: Good Friday  -  NOON & 7:00 P.M.

With the cross as our focus, we gather for readings, singing, and prayers to remember the day when Jesus died. It is the long custom of the Church to pray on Good Friday for the whole world, and the many ways in which Christ is still crucified. Solemn and beautiful.

An offering is taken on this day for the Episcopal Church in the Holy Land and its ministry of peace and healing amid the horror of war.

  • March 30: The Great Vigil of Easter -  7:30 p.m.

This service is the most important and beautiful of all the services of the church year. Known in the early church as “The Queen of Feasts”, the Vigil service begins with new fire, from which we light the Paschal candle, which will burn throughout the Great Fifty Days of Easter as a sign of the light of the resurrected Christ. We hear the foundational stories of our faith in the darkness, and bless new baptismal water as we renew our baptismal vows. We are sprinkled with the water of new life. Then, the trumpets sound, the lights come up, and we celebrate the first Eucharist of Easter. Alleluia! Christ is Risen!

  • March 31:  Easter Sunday - ONE SERVICE at 10:15 a.m.

We celebrate the Resurrection with glorious music, beautiful liturgy, all the flowers that the church can hold, our most beautiful vestments, and your favorite Easter hymns. Following the service, the kids participate in an Easter egg roll as the adults enjoy a festive coffee hour.

Parish Office Hours:  Monday - Friday, 9:00 am - 5:00 pm

  • Each week we seek to glorify God in liturgies that move the heart and challenge the mind. We have made careful choices in our language so that our worship includes expansive imagery for God. We are both reverent and joyful, with traditional and contemporary elements in the liturgy. Our music includes a wide range of styles, accompanied by organ, piano, band, and strings. We love our traditions, and we are making some new ones that help us to encounter God anew.

  • If you’re looking for a welcoming congregation or wondering what that Episcopal church down on Wass Street in Tustin is all about, you’ve come to the right spot. Whoever you are, whatever your background, we’re glad you’re visiting us here. Please join us for worship and meet us in person. No one’s a stranger for long at St. Paul’s!

We are a progressive and affirming community and whether you’re curious or confirmed, wandering or wondering, all are welcome here in their journey of faith.

We are part of something larger, too. We are a parish of the Episcopal Diocese of Los Angeles, which in turn is part of the Episcopal Church, an international province of the worldwide Anglican Communion. We have family everywhere!

  • When was the last time you ate homemade potato salad under shady trees on a big old church lawn? Ever tried your hand at potato racing? Looking for a book group or craft guild? An open-minded, thoughtful Bible study? Yes, we worship and pray together, but we also love to just get together. We're always finding new ways to gather for conversation, fun, music, service, study, fellowship and - of course - food! It's more than just fun, of course; it's community. All are welcome here.
